50+ Tech Giants Sign Open Letter Defending Open-Weight AI

Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and roughly 47 other companies, VCs, and nonprofits signed an open letter urging Washington not to restrict open-weight AI models. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang posted it first with 25 signatories; within a day OpenAI, Google, AMD, and Cisco joined — but Anthropic notably did not sign. The letter argues open weights broaden access, preserve competition, strengthen cyber defense, and prevent vendor lock-in, and lands amid accusations that Chinese labs extracted intelligence from U.S. models, including Anthropic's Fable.

Why it matters

💻 Developer · A united industry stance defending open weights is worth watching if any part of your stack depends on open-weight models remaining unrestricted.

📦 Product · Regulatory uncertainty around open-weight models is a real roadmap risk — this letter is a signal of where industry pressure is heading, not a resolution.

🎨 Design · Not directly relevant.

📈 Business · Anthropic sitting out a letter signed by nearly every other major lab, amid accusations its own model was distilled by Chinese competitors, is a notable position worth watching as the policy fight develops.

🤔 Just Curious · Over 50 tech companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, signed a letter asking the US government not to restrict free-to-use AI models — but Anthropic, the maker of Claude, didn't sign it.
