Anthropic Finds Claude's Personality Shifts Depending on What Language You Speak to It

Anthropic analyzed 309,000 user conversations across 20 languages and found Claude's personality varies significantly by language: Dutch interactions prompt more admissions of error, Hindi adds warmth, English pushes deeper into detail. Model versions differ too — Sonnet 4.6 acts warmer and briefer, Opus 4.7 more candid and cautious. Anthropic doesn't yet know why, naming uneven training data as the leading suspect.

Why it matters

💻 Developer · If you're building a multilingual product on Claude, be aware that behavior consistency across languages isn't guaranteed today — worth testing your specific use case in each target language rather than assuming parity.

📦 Product · Language-dependent personality drift is a real product-quality issue for any global-facing AI feature — worth flagging in your own QA process if you support multiple languages.

🎨 Design · This is genuinely useful UX research: if your non-English users report the AI "feels different," this explains why, and it's not something prompt engineering alone easily fixes.

📈 Business · Uneven training data across languages is likely true of every major LLM, not just Claude — a blind spot worth factoring into any global AI deployment strategy.

🤔 Just Curious · Anthropic discovered that its Claude AI acts differently depending on what language you speak to it in — warmer and more personal in some languages, more clinical and detailed in others — and they're not entirely sure why yet.
